What are some different types of door materials and door styles?

The most common door materials are wood, steel and fiberglass. These materials can dictate the style of doors. For example, interior wood doors are typically six panel, two panel, one panel or flat “slab”. Interior wood doors can also be hinged doors, barn doors, Dutch doors, French doors, bifold, sliding and pocket doors. Generally, steel is used in the garage as a fire deterrent and fiberglass is great for exterior doors, especially in coastal areas.

What are some different types of windows?

There are many types of windows, including double-hung, casement, bay windows, picture windows, basement hoppers and egress windows. The most common are double hung and casement windows.

Double-hung windows have two operating sashes that move up and down allowing for ventilation on the top, bottom or both top and bottom.

A casement window is a window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges at the side.

Bay windows protrude out a bit and offer a larger platform instead of a sill.

Picture windows are similar to bay windows because of their larger size. They have stationary glass that doesn’t protrude to the exterior of the house.

A basement hopper is a small, inexpensive window made for basements in which the top hinge opens halfway to prevent burglars from sneaking in.

Egress windows are large enough to let someone out of the basement in case of a fire. They can escape by climbing up an excavated well with a built in ladder and removable cover.

What are the different types of stairs?

There are half a dozen different types of stairs depending on how much space you have in the home. The most common is a straight line of stairs that do not have any turns. The next most common is an“L”shape that usually turns into a platform which then continues up the stairs. Spiral staircases are for really tight spaces and can be fabricated for a modern look, but because of difficulty of movement it isn’t the most popular choice. The grandest staircase is the bifurcated stair where one stair splits off into two separate stairs for the right and left side of the house.

Doors, Windows & Stairs FAQs

How much does it typically cost to install windows?

The price to install a new construction window ranges from $300-$800, depending on size. Most window installations are new construction. They have a flange on the exterior side of the window which can be nailed to the outside sheathing of the house. Replacement windows are just that, removing the old window and replacing it with another window that is the same exact size. The install fee for replacement windows is typically $200-$400 per window.

What are some ideas for repurposing an old door?

One of today’s top trends is working with reclaimed, old “barn wood” and creating or updating existing wood projects in the home. I live in a coastal town that has many old doors from over a hundred years ago that customers reuse for interesting and unique  projects. For example, after stripping many years of paint off a door customers have created coffee tables, benches, shelves and even a bar. The only limit is your imagination!

“Over the past 10 years I have used Marshall Gemal at Garden State Renovations for many remodeling and replacements for my home. This includes a complete renovation of my kitchen. Driveway repaving , roof replacement, new pavers in front porch and walkways and painting to name a few. Each job was done with extreme professionalism. I was completely satisfied and I highly recommend this company for any job small or big!
