Windows 101

Wondering what type of window to put up on your home? Here are some quick and easy facts about windows for your next renovation. Basically, there are two types of windows: double hung, which are windows that go up and down, and casement windows, which open from the side with a handle. Out of those two styles there is a sub category, which is known as “new construction.” This sub category style is generally for new homes or if you are creating a new space for a window. The most common is the replacement window, which is basically replacing an old window with a new one.

Windows can have low maintenance exteriors, which are generally vinyl and come in a range of colors to match the exterior of the house. The inside could be vinyl, unfinished pine or primed pine.

Depending on the look of your house you have the option of ordering windows with grills that can be permanent, removal, or finelight, which are grills between the glass.

Most new replacement windows now have energy saving treatments on the glass known as Low-E. Low-E glass options (from Andersen Windows) helps to control heating and cooling costs. They also filter out almost 100% of UV rays.

There are actually different types of glass you can order such as tinted, tempered safety glass and dual pane. Those options are not as common as patterned frosted glass which lets light in but does not allow visuals from the outside or inside. This is especially common on bathroom windows.

Finally, there are several options on the hardware. These are especially popular on casement window cranks.
