Working Well with Your Contractor

Whether you are renovating the whole house, or just a small portion of a room, good communication with your contractor is very important.  At the very least you need to provide access to your job site, be available to the contractor and tradespeople, and respond to questions with somewhat quick decisions.

Setting Expectations

You need to know what to expect from the contractor, check in about daily progress, and figure out together what the next steps are moving forward. Also, making sure that the contractor has a system for cleaning up and protecting the rest of the house from dust is crucial.

Contractor Communication 101

·       Be sure to communicate with the person in charge, whether that’s the contractor or the foreman.

·       Try to visit the site daily and be ready to supply materials that are not specified in the contract.

·       Expect that the job cost could escalate because it’s impossible to anticipate every unforeseen problem, especially in older homes.

·       Early identification of problems is critical to resolving them successfully. Have a list on hand with specific issues in order to have them resolved quickly.
