The Importance of Preventative Maintenance for Any Home
All too often we take for granted that everything is working in our homes…so there’s no need for preventive maintenance, right? But the truth is that if you don’t schedule preventive maintenance for your home, your home will schedule it for you.
There are so many important preventative maintenance actions to list and keep in mind, but here are the most important ones for all seasons that you should be aware of as a homeowner and that we at Garden State Renovations use to keep your home up and running no matter what happens.
Inspect and replace HVAC filters
Inspect your fire extinguishers
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Run water and flush toilets in unused places
Test electricity wherever you can
Tighten any handles, knobs, etc.
Check all locks and deadbolts on your doors and windows
Check caulking and grout around bathtubs and showers
Remove showerheads and clean sediment
Check exterior drainage
Clean out gutters
Have your AC system prepped for the summer
Replace damaged window screens
Check trees for interference with electric lines
Inspect roof for damages or leaks
Inspect plumbing for leaks, clean aerators on faucets
Repair decks and patio as needed
Clean dryer vent
Professionally Winterize the house
Test sump pump
Get chimney cleaned
Again, this is the short but it’s certainly a useful list to get you started in the right direction. Try to divide these actions by seasons as well as annually and biannually so that you’re home will run like clockwork and without any nasty surprises.
Good luck! Stay tuned for my next blog entry.
