Home Gym Renovation Tips

We’ve received an increase in the amount of requests and projects to renovate a portion of our clients’ homes into a home gym.

In these Covid times many of our regular customers are feeling a bit of “withdrawal symptoms” because they can’t work out at their favorite gym. So in this month’s blog we’re going to focus on how to utilize the extra space in your basement, garage or spare room into a workout space.

The Basics

Let’s start by trying to duplicate what you like about your favorite gym. I would start with padded flooring, although some people like hardwood or laminate flooring. I personally like ½ inch thick 24”x24” square rubber interlocking floor panels. I can’t imagine dropping weights on a hardwood floor or worse - slipping on a floor that’s coated with sweat.

Lighting: Install plenty of overhead LED lighting but also have a dimmer light in order to create an atmospheric space perfect for yoga or meditation.

Circulation: It’s important to have some fans running for a cool off period as well as a dehumidifiers running at all times to soak up moisture in the air.

Air Fresheners: A home gym in an enclosed space has the propensity to attract some musty odors. It’s a good idea to have some sort of air freshener. The essential oils that spew from a mist machine are a good choice.

Mirror: If the space allows, a wall to wall mirror with a ballet bar helps to give you a visual indication of your progress.

TV and Music: A good sized flat screen TV running your favorite shows or news channel keeps the focus away from the repetitiveness of your workout. Stereo piped in music is also great for putting a good beat into your exercise.

Finally, you’ll need some basic machines tailored to your regimen, a towel bar with some freshly laundered towels, a clock and hand sanitizers if you’re expecting guests.

The actual renovation is a low cost project that can reap great rewards for your health and well being. Give us a ring if you’re interested and we can discuss turning your unused space into the home gym of your dreams.
