Flooring 101

One of the top ten home improvement projects is flooring. Tired looking floors can look revitalized with the following professional applications.

First let’s start with the basement. I’ve seen too many basements in which the homeowner installed carpeting. Generally, basements can attract moisture so in certain cases carpets may attract mold and mildew. If your basement falls into that category you may want to install tile instead. Tile is easy to clean and is mold and mildew free. In addition, you might consider laminate wood flooring which will give you a warmer, cozier feel and look.

When it comes to wood flooring for the rest of the house there are generally a few options. The most popular are prefinished hardwood floors, engineered, and sand and stain.

In the prefinished category the types of wood are varied to fit every need and budget, and will fit in every décor such as modern, traditional, country, etc. because it is solid wood so it can be sanded and stained many times to give it a fresh new look and color if needed.

Engineered flooring is a veneer glued to several layers of plywood which gives it stability but can only be refinished a couple of times.

Sanding and staining is a treatment in which the wood is sanded down to its natural color, and then there is an application of custom stain finished off with a few coats of oil or water based polyurethane.  I recommend oil based poly coating because it lasts longer (although it has an odor that dissipates in a few days). Water based is odor free but more susceptible to scratches and wear.
