Design Ideas for High Ceilings
Towards the end of any interior renovation where finish carpentry comes into play, very often the homeowner and contractor may make suggestions on improving the look over and above the architectural plans when the ceilings are higher than the standard eight foot ceilings.
Crown moldings
Probably the most common and popular looks are the installation of crown moldings which is particularly attractive on ceilings higher than eight feet. There are many sizes and variations of crown moldings which run the gamut from traditional to modern styles.
Coffered ceilings
Coffered ceilings are a beautiful way of reimagining an elegant look for high ceilings. Coffered ceilings have a multitude of options such as natural wood, finished stained wood, and covered beams with sheetrock matching the ceilings.
Door sizes
Tall ceilings are also especially utilized when it comes to traditional door sizes. The installation of a glass transom over the door fills the bland space from the door to the ceiling.
Lighting
Electrical fixtures such as LED recessed lights are basic; however the use of a modern light fixture or chandelier can improve the character of the room. Coffered ceilings which run alongside the ceiling walls can be semi open and have hidden LED strip lights for a nice ambient glow to the ceiling.
Windows
If part of the plans call for new windows the best option if possible is to add floor to ceiling windows with window treatments.
Painting
Painting the room with light colors will give the room a big and open feeling. Especially popular is a soft gray which gives the space a contemporary touch.
Artwork
Large paintings or artwork to fill the large wall spaces are a great way to put your own stamp of creativity on a large room.
Wainscot & millwork
Panel wainscot and other molding millwork is another option that can help break up a room into a space divided by white painted wainscot against the color chosen for the wall paint. Wainscot is great for coastal and traditional design applications.
